Hermeus, the aerospace startup developing Mach 5 aircraft for both commercial and defense markets, announced that it has established a permanent presence in the Washington, D.C. area. Dr. Daniel Kliman, a leading national security expert, has joined the company to head its operations in the Nation’s Capital.  Dr. Kliman is recognized for his work on U.S. strategic competition with China, and previously directed the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. Most recently, he was mobilized to active duty from the U.S. Navy Reserve and deployed overseas. He has also worked at the Department of Defense, where he contributed to efforts to sustain America’s conventional military edge.

“To prevail in the contest with China, the United States needs to leverage innovative companies at the nexus of commercial technology and national security,” said Dr. Kliman. “From my first conversation with the Hermeus founders, I was inspired by their commitment to a larger national mission. I’m excited to roll up my sleeves and build a company that will advance American competitiveness.”

Along the way to flying the world’s fastest passenger jet, Hermeus is developing platforms with national security applications.

“We’re thrilled to set up shop in the Washington, D.C. area at a time when U.S. policymakers increasingly recognize the importance of reusable high-speed flight,” said AJ Piplica, Founder and CEO at Hermeus.

“Our operations in the Nation’s Capital will greatly benefit from Dr. Kliman’s understanding of the China problem set and military operational experience,” said Dr. Michael Smayda, Founder and Chief Product Officer at Hermeus. “He is uniquely positioned to ensure that Hermeus contributes to American competitiveness.”
